Store Couponing Guides "101"

To help you with your couponing and savvy spending, I'm adding some Couponing 101 guides to my sidebar on the right. So far tonight, I've added CVS and Rite Aid. These short articles will help you learn the "in's and out's" of each store and how their coupon policy works.
Please let me know if these help or if you still have questions. I'm hoping these guides will help you to plan your shopping strategy before you even step foot in the door.
I'll be posting these 101 Guides for stores I shop at here in Michigan- CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, Meijer, Kroger, Target, and WalMart. I may add some other stores like Aldi later on.

CVS -- 101 Guide

CVS SHOPPING

CVS Offers:

Extra Care Bucks- CVS has a loyalty program and tracks purchases with a card called the Extra Care Bucks card. If you don't have an Extra Care Bucks card, you can get one in the store and use it immediately.
The Extra Care Bucks program gives you cash back on purchases you make in stores and online. You will earn 2% cash back in the form of Extra Care Bucks every three months. They will print in the form of a little coupon on the bottom of your receipt.
CVS will also have Extra Care Bucks deals each week in the store. There is a limit on how many of the same product you can buy AND get the ECB's. (If the limit is 2, you can still buy 3, you just won't get the ECB's back for any the 3rd item.) Sometimes you will get the entire purchase price back in the form of Extra Care Bucks, essentially making the item free.

You can also use coupons on these deals to turn it into a moneymaker. For example:
Crest toothpaste- $2.99, get $2.99 ECB (limit 2)
Buy 2 Crest toothpastes= $5.98
Use 2 $1.00/1 coupons = pay $3.98
Get back ECB's for both items purchased = $5.98
= after ECB's you made $2.00 and you have 2 free tubes of toothpaste.

Rolling of ECB's- Once you get used to shopping at CVS, you can start "rolling" your Extra Care Bucks and keep your out of pocket expenses low. For example, in the scenario above, you could use the $5.98 you have in ECB's the next week at CVS on something else that is generating ECB's. For example:
                     week 1:
Crest toothpaste- $2.99, get $2.99 ECB (limit 2)
Buy 2 Crest toothpastes= $5.98
Use 2 $1.00/1 coupons = pay $3.98 out of pocket
Get back ECB's for both items purchased = $5.98
= after ECB's you made $2.00 and you have 2 free tubes of toothpaste.
                   week 2:
Pantene hair care products- $2.50, buy $10 worth, get $5 ECB (limit 1)
Buy 4 Pantene hair card products = $10
use 4 $1.00/1 coupons = $6
pay with your $5.98 in ECB's from week 1 (pay tax out of pocket)
Get back $5 in ECB's
= free! You "rolled" your ECB's into new ECB's for the next week!

CVS Store coupons- CVS offers their own store coupons that can be stacked with manufacturer coupons. You can find these coupons at the end of your receipt, by scanning your ECB card at the red kiosk in the front of the store, you can sometimes print them online, or find them in newspapers and magazines. In the scenarios above, if there were CVS store coupons available, you could use them WITH the manufacturer coupons to save even more.

*CVS also has "Money off a certain amount" coupons that you can use with all your other coupons. For example, they often have $5 off $25 coupons that will take $5 off your grand total BEFORE any other coupons you're redeeming. This helps to bring your total down, cover the left overs that your coupons didn't cover, and helps you to get things for free. You'll want to give this coupon to your cashier first. These coupons will also be at the end of your receipt, at the card scanner kiosk at the front of the store, or in your email! Make sure you sign up with or update your email address with your Extra Care card and you'll start receiving these coupons.

Any questions? Feel free to email me if something isn't clear!

Rite Aid -- 101 Guide

RITE AID SHOPPING

Rite Aid offers:

Single Check rebates- if you flip through an ad for Rite Aid, you'll notice that many items will say SCR by it. This stands for Single Check Rebate, which means that you can enter your receipt information online here (you'll need to register first) and get a rebate check for buying that item. There is a limit of how much of the same product you can get money back on- sometimes it is just 1 or 2 and sometimes it is more. You can enter numerous separate receipts for the month, but you can only request one check, so don't click "request rebate" until you are sure you're ready. (You can also see the items eligible for SCR's  here)

You can use coupons with items that are eligible for Single Check Rebates and turn these deals into moneymakers! For example:
Crest toothpaste- $2.99, SCR or $2.99 (limit 2)
Buy 2 Crest toothpastes= $5.98
Use 2 $1.00/1 coupons = pay $3.98
Submit for (2) $2.99 rebates
= after rebate check, you made $2.00 and you have 2 free tubes of toothpaste.

You will see your rebate approved online within about 48 hours and your check will arrive in the mail a few days later. You can contact the Rite Aid Single Check Rebate Customer Care number for assistance: 1-888-213-9920 (8 AM – 7PM EST) or contact them here.

Rite Aid Coupons- you will also see Rite Aid store coupons in their sale ad that you can stack with manufacturer coupons to save even more. If, in the Crest toothpaste scenario above, there was an in-ad coupon for Crest, you could use that WITH the $1.00/1 manufacturer coupon (=stacking).

*Rite Aid also has "Money off a certain amount" coupons that you can use with all your other coupons. For example, they often have $5 off $25 coupons that will take $5 off your grand total BEFORE any other coupons you're redeeming. This helps to bring your total down, cover the left overs that your coupons didn't cover, and helps you to get things for free.

*Rite Aid also has a newer program called Rite Aid Video Values. You can watch short videos/advertisements online and earn credits for coupons for various products. These are also Rite Aid coupons and can be stacked with manufacturer coupons. Once you earn 20 video credits, you can print an additional $5/$20 in-store coupon. Go here to read more about the Video Values Program.

Any questions? Feel free to email me if something isn't clear!

Great deal on the movie UP!

Kristin at Couponing to Disney has the scoop on a great Disney movie deal! Amazon.com has Up on DVD on sale for $9.49. There is a rebate to get $5 back when you buy 2 Birds Eye Voila meals and an additional $5 back when you buy 2 Kernal Seasoning and the movie Up.
**Here’s the deal she cooked UP (ha ha):
Buy Up for just $9.49 on Amazon.com (ships free with a $25 purchase or Amazon Prime)
Buy 2 Birds Eye Voila meals for $3.99 ea at Walmart or anywhere else you find a good price
Use 2 $1 printable coupons for the Voila
Buy 2 Kernal Seasonings for about $1.98 ea
Submit for the $5 rebate on Birds Eye Voila here.
Submit for the $5 rebate on Kernal Seasonings here.
*The reason this works is because both rebates require a purchase tab (each DVD has 2) and a copy of the receipt.
Your total will be just $9.43 for Up, 2 Birds Eye Voila meals and 2 Kernal Seasonings. So It’s like getting Up for free!
This is only good until 2/28/10! And, Amazon prices can change quickly!

This is a cute movie. If you haven't seen it, though, let me warn you: you WILL need Kleenex in the first 5 minutes! The Voila meals are pretty good too- nice to have in the freezer on a day you just couldn't get a homemade dinner prepared!

Sweet Reward for Good Grades

Get free bakery goodies from IBC bakery outlets when your kids get good grades (K-6th). Here’s how to get a sweet reward:
1. When a child receives their report card with either all A’s, B’s or both A’s and B’s, the student or parent can print out a copy of the IBC Student Achievement Award and take it to the child’s teacher to get signed.
2. Once you have a copy of the Student Achievement Award and a teacher’s signature, bring it along with the student’s report card to the nearest IBC bakery outlet store to redeem the sweet reward!
[Rules may vary. For more information, contact the IBC bakery outlet store nearest you by using our Store Locator zip code search.]
3. The hard-working student will then receive a FREE Hostess or Dolly Madison snack cake. Parents also win! By encouraging your child to do well in school, you will also receive one FREE loaf of bread just for bringing your child and his/her report card to one of the outlet stores.

It's not a big reward, but if you have this bakery nearby, it's a simple little prize to claim, plus Mom and Dad get free bread! I didn't think I had one of these near me, but when I searched, it turned up several "Wonder Bread" bakery's in the area that I didn't realize where IBC bakery's. So, type in your zip in the Store Locator and see if there is one near you!

Free Johnson's, Yo Baby, Renu

When you see a coupon for $1/1 and there is no size restriction on the coupon, is it totally okay to buy the smallest size. In fact, it's the best deal. I often use coupons on smaller items or travel size items to score things for free. I'd rather have 10 small packages of something for FREE than to get the same total amount in one package and have had to pay for it!
Here are some coupons that you can print for free small products:
*Johnson's Soap Buddies- use this $1/1 any Johnson’s product printable coupon to get it for free at Target and Walmart.

*Yo Baby Yogurt-  use this $1.00 on 1 YoBaby Whole Milk yogurt to get the individual cups free at Walmart. You may be able to print more than 2. If you register first, then come back and click this link to sign in again and print (and maybe again and again).

*Renu contact solution- go here to print $1/1 to get the travel size free at Target and Walmart.

If the item is less than $1, your cashier can "adjust it down". Most store's coupon policies state this, but often I have to inform the cashier.

Groupon Contest- you could win $100,000!

I heard a teaser on the news tonight for a COUPON CLIPPING CONTEST, so I immediately paid attention.
The new coupon website, Groupon (have you seen the ads on my site? They are coming to Detroit soon I heard), is sponsoring a contest in which you have to literally LIVE OFF COUPONS for an entire year. I'm thinking, "Hmmm, I could do this. Everything I buy is with a coupon anyway."
..... But that's not quite all. It turns out, you have to give up your job, your home, your money, your clothes (you'll be given a suit made out of Groupons!) and literally live off Groupon coupons for a year. IF you are the lucky person selected and you are able to do this for a year, you'll win $100,000.
......Okay, I'm out. How can anyone with a family and commitments really do this? As I read the FAQ, it seems you are expected to travel around the country to the cities in which there are Groupon coupons. You basically won't be around for a year. But, it does sound great for the right (single, without kids) person and could be a really cool experience!
If you're interested, check out the information here and see the news clip I saw here.
What do you think? Is this possible? Will you apply? :)

My Walgreens Trip 2/15

I had to run to Walgreens tonight because 1) I had $10 in RR that expired today (and unlike CVS, you can't use your rewards money after it expires) and 2) we were OUT of butter (I thought I had more in the freezer; haven't bought any since getting about 10 for free last fall!)
So, I wanted to stretch my RR as much as possible and also ROLL them into new RR's.
Here is what I bought:
4 Vicks products, used 4 $1.50/1 coupons from the 2/7 PG (these expire in 2011, but I'll donate most of them b/c we just won't need them all... I hope!)
2 Puffs tissue, used 2 "Buy 2 Vicks, get Puffs free" from the 2/7 PG
1 Country Crock butter, used $0.30/1 coupon from the 1/31 RP
2 Bic Razors, used B1G1 free coupon from the 1/10 SS and Rain Check from B1G1 free past promo
2 Crest Rinse mouthwash, used 2 $2/1 coupons from the 2/7 PG
1 Oral B stages toothpaste for kids, used $1/1 coupon from the 2/7 PG
2 Trident gum, used $0.75/1 coupon from the 2/7 SS AND in-ad Walgreens coupon (making them .69)
1 M&M's Valentines bag- half off- bought so that I could use RR (since I had a coupon for everything I was buying, and RR's count as coupons, so you have to have a "filler" item)
1 small bag M&M's near register- so I could use another RR.

I spent $13 in RR and $11.81 out of pocket, but earned another $12.50 in RR's ($10 for spending $20 on Vicks products, and $2.50 from the Crest mouthwash). According to my receipt, I saved $52.40!

I'm hoping to make a trip to Target tomorrow, so I'll post those pictures tomorrow. :)

Olay $15 Rebate! Lots of moneymaking scenarios!

There is a brand new Olay rebate available. You can read all the details here, but basically you have to buy three products (facial moisturizers, treatments, or cleansers, hand & body lotions, body washes, or the 6+ packs of bar soap). There are TONS of stores with sales on this product, and you can pair it with coupons to actually make money. I listed one below in the Target deals, but there are also ways to get a great deal by buying it at Walgreens, CVS, and Rite Aid!

My Frugal Adventures had the scoop on how to make money on this deal without cutting a coupon or leaving your house!  She looked at the online grocery site called Alice.com and they have several kinds of Olay Body Wash for $2.99 right now. It automatically applies coupons to your price for you! You can get the three Olay products necessary for the rebate for $8.97 (free shipping). Submit the receipt you'll get with your shipment to Olay HERE and get $15 back. This makes it a $6 moneymaker and you don’t have to leave the house!

I haven't used Alice.com yet, but I know some people LOVE it. You can also use your swagbucks to get Alice.com gift cards! One cool thing about this site is once you spend $50 total, you'll get a $10 credit. For first time customers, you can get free shipping when you buy just 3 items (after that, you'll have to buy 6 things for free shipping).

Target Gift Card deals

Did you see all the "FREE Gift Card" deals in the new Target ad? (You can view the ad online here) If you pair these deals with coupons, you can get a great price! The nice thing about the gift card deals is you can "roll" them if you have enough coupons to repeat the scenario a few times or use the gift card from one deal to pay for a different deal! If you don't have the coupons for these deals, ask your friends, coworkers, family or buy them on ebay!
