Do you want to 2011 to be the year you spend less and save more? Do you want to learn to be savvy in your spending?
I decided to kick off the New Year by sharing my top
11 tips for Frugal Living and Savvy Spending! I want to persuade you the being frugal is
NOT the same as being cheap or going without. Frugality actually means "
to avoid waste; using discretion; be economical".
So, for the next
11 days, I'll bring you a new tip each day. These tips are based on things I practice everyday and what makes me a "frugal" person. I don't feel I'm cheap (
I sure hope not!) and we definitately do not go without. We just choose to use discretion in what we buy, avoid wasting our money, and work how to stretch that dollar as far as it can go!
I'd love to hear your thoughts or helpful tips too! Leave me a comment below if you want!
TIP #1: Savvy Spending when Dining Out!
I love going out to eat as much as the next person, but we all know that it is definitely not easy on the pocketbook! Going out to eat is a treat for our family and usually only happens a few times a month; rarely do we all go out every week. When my husband and I were first married, we would easily go out 2-3 times a week! Our restaurant bills probably easily cost us over a thousand dollars a year in those first years!!
So, now when we go out to eat, here is how we are savvy with our spending:
1) Order water to drink.
If all 4 of us ordered a drink, that could easily cost $5 alone! That's like the price of five 2 liters of bottles of pop! Not savvy spending at all! So, we order water (well, hubby doesn't, but that's okay). Water is better for you, it's free, and you're not as tempted to fill up on the sugar and calories of a pop you paid for. We also sometimes bring sippy cups from home for the girls to drink if we go someplace where a drink is not included in a kids' meal.
2) Use a coupon!
I would guess that 75% of the restaurants in your area offer some type of coupon. Check Valpak.com for coupons to print, clip them from the newspaper, invest in your city's Entertainment Book, get a coupon from Restaurant.com, etc. We only visit a restaurant that offers a Buy One, Get One Free deal or other type of good deal, like $8 off $20. We also try to go places where the kids meals are either a) free, b) cheap, or c) large enough for our girls to share.
You may think this will cut down on your restaurants options, but you'd be surprised! Even when we double date with friends, if another couple throws out a few names of places, I will see what coupons I have for those places. We can usually agree on a restaurant we all like and we can save money! Even if it's just a Free Appetizer, it will help a great deal!
3) Join the Rewards Club!
This is especially beneficial around your birthday! Restaurants will reward you for dining with them (for example: Max & Erma's increases your percentage off with your Rewards Club for every so many visits), send you great coupons in your email, and usually will give you something totally FREE on your anniversary and/or birthday!
4) Share a Meal or Take Some Home
If you visit a restaurant where you can get a free appetizer with a coupon and then share an entree, you'll save lots of money and still have plenty to eat! Let's face it- those portions are usually plenty big, especially if you count the free bread, chips, etc. you had to begin with! Try to cut yourself off when you've eaten half your meal and take the rest home. We love to have leftovers for the next day and turn 1 restaurant dinner into a leftovers lunch the next day! Some people will actually box up half their meal before they even begin eating!
5) Fast Food Dollar Menus
If you pick up Fast Food, order from the Dollar Menu! You can get the same amount of food as you would in a Meal Deal for less. Most fast food restaurants have a Dollar Menu now. We also follow the above tips for Fast Food as well- skip the pop and get water, or take it home and drink your own pop, share a meal (for example, we'll order the 20 piece chicken nuggets and $1 fries and all share), and use coupons.
6) Skip the Dessert
I personally think that desserts at restaurants, like pop, are very overpriced! I could buy a carton of ice cream for the same price as a small sundae! We are usually too stuffed after eating to order dessert anyways, and we have a stockpile of desserts that we got for free at home, if we get a sweet tooth later!
