11 Savvy Spending Tips for 2011: Day 7- Do It Yourself!

Do you want to 2011 to be the year you spend less and save more? Do you want to learn to be savvy in your spending?
I decided to kick off the New Year by sharing my top 11 tips for Frugal Living and Savvy Spending! I want to persuade you the being frugal is NOT the same as being cheap or going without. Frugality actually means "to avoid waste; using discretion; be economical".

So, for the next 11 days, I'll bring you a new tip each day. These tips are based on things I practice everyday and what makes me a "frugal" person. I don't feel I'm cheap (I sure hope not!) and we definitely do not go without. We just choose to use discretion in what we buy, avoid wasting our money, and work how to stretch that dollar as far as it can go!

I'd love to hear your thoughts or helpful tips too! Leave me a comment below if you want!

Tip #7: Be Savvy with your Spending by becoming a "Do It Yourself-er"

I'm very fortunate to be married to a Do It Yourself kind of guy. If I can brag on him for a moment, he has done so many projects that have saved us thousands of dollars- he's built two decks in the time we've been married, torn down walls, installed a wood burner, built the window bench I always wanted, refinished floors, does most of the painting, landscaping, and more! Now, there are times I wish we had the money to pay someone to do the work for us (it's much quicker usually, but then again, hubby works a full time job, so I can't harp on him too much), but we know how much money we save by doing the work ourselves.

If you want to save some money this year, look at all the things you pay someone else to do. Could you do it yourself?

1) Yard Work: Do you pay someone to mow your lawn? There may be a physical reason you can't do it, but I wonder if you could save some money by hiring a local high school student? Do you hire a landscaper to work on your yard? Could you find a college student who is majoring in Landscape Design and pay them a fraction of the cost?
If there isn't a physical or health reason that you hire someone else to do it, try the Do It Yourself way for awhile. You may learn that you actually enjoy it, are good at it, and you'll save money! Even if you don't know much about landscaping, you probably know a friend with a beautiful flower garden or backyard design. Ask him/her for their help. Or, seek out the professionals at Lowe's or Home Depot and get some ideas and pointers for free!

2) Housecleaning: If you are paying someone to clean your house for health or physical reasons, just like above, you could probably find someone by asking around or hiring a college student and pay less than the big name companies. If you want to try the Do It Yourself way, try to split up the chores so that you aren't doing them all on one day. Before I had kids, Saturday was our big housecleaning day; I'd clean the house from top to bottom. Now that I have kids, I feel like I'm cleaning everyday! But if I break the chores up to one or two a day, it doesn't feel like I'm spending hours cleaning.
If you have kids who are old enough to help, in my opinion, they should be! If you want to reward them for helping with an allowance or other treat, you can. But they can help contribute to the family by doing small chores around the house. My kids are still little and the "help" sometimes makes more work for me, but they do simple chores now and when they get older, they will definitely help clean! :)

3) Painting- I know I am the world's worst painter and you wouldn't want to hire me to paint for you, but if you know someone who is creative and good at painting, ask them for help. Or, see if you can swap for something you can do for them.

4) Fix Up Jobs- you may not be a handy person, but you probably know someone who is. Everyone wants to save some money, so if you have some small jobs that need fixing at your house, see if you can offer your services to them! Can you make some freezer meals, mend some clothes, help with yard work, change their oil, or swap some other way?

What sort of "Do It Yourself" tips do you have to save money?

11 Savvy Spending Tips for 2011- Day 6: Buy Used!

Tip #6: Be Savvy with your Spending by Buying Used whenever possible

My Dad used to say that you never buy a new car because it begins to depreciate the moment you drive it off the lot. Well, the same thing goes for a lot of things we buy. If you're thinking of purchasing something that you'll outgrow or no longer need in a few years, is it worth it to buy new? Could you do some searching and find a great used item for a fraction of the price? YES!
If there is an item we're looking to buy, we'll often check out the prices of a good, used one first! We've found furniture, clothes, electronics, cars, baby gear, tools, etc. this way! There are many websites and stores you can shop for used items!

1) Ebay- ebay is one of my first stops when I'm shopping for almost anything. You can search for an item and filter the results by price, when the auction is ending, and even by location (see if it's close enough to pick up to avoid paying shipping). Plus, ebay backs you up and offers buyer protection. If you ever have a problem with a seller or you don't receive your item, ebay will go to work for you to make things right!

2) Thrift Stores, Consignment Stores- We have some great thrift stores near us, like Goodwill, Salvation Army, and Once Upon a Child. If there is something specific I'm looking for (say for example, toddler size pink tights), I'll always look here first! Why pay double when you can get a barely used one for half the price?

3) Craigslist.org- Craiglist is like ebay, but without the buyer protection or listing fees. You can find a Craigslist listing in your area, so you know that the item is close by. You can contact the seller via email or phone and work out a time to meet and see the item you're looking at.

4) Mom2Mom sales, Garage Sales or Estate Sales- You can find some great treasures by shopping these sales. The best part is- you can negotiate! This is a great place to buy things for children for the following year. You'll have a great wardrobe for a fraction of the cost in the department stores.
You can find Mom2Mom sales in SouthEastern Michigan by here or do a search online for sales in other states.

And finally, consider selling or donating things you don't need or don't use with any of the above options! I love to clean out the house of unwanted clothes, toys, and other clutter and donate it or sell it on ebay! You'll have made some money and made some space in your house!

HUGE moneymaker deals on Electrasol or Airwick and Maalox at CVS next week!

Whooaa! Hold on to your $2.25 Electrasol coupons and start scrounging for more, because CVS is going to have an incredible deal beginning this Sunday 1/9.

Get $10 ECB wyb $20 Lysol, Finish or Airwick (Limit 1)

Electrasol Finish tabs $3
Buy (7) to get over the $20 mark
Use (7) $2.25/1 Finish from 1/2 SS
Pay $4.75, but get back $10 ECB
Final cost: ALL FREE + a $5.25 moneymaker!!

OR you can get some free Airwick products:
(since there is a limit of 1 for the ECB's, you'll have to choose between the Electrasol deal and the Airwick deal)

Airwick refills 2pk, Fresh Matic refill, i-motion refill or kit $5

Buy (4) i-Motion Kits = $20
Use (4) $3/1 Airwick i-Motion from 1/2 SS
Pay $8, but get $10 ECB

Final cost: FREE + a $1 moneymaker

...and Pepsi 12-Packs will be for 6/$10 or $1.67 each after ECB's!

Here is my advice:
If you don't have the coupons, find a friend who'd like to buy some with you on ebay (they are usually sold in large packs). The wonderful thing about CVS is, they will write you a RAINCHECK if they are out (and they are gauranteed to be out near me by Sunday morning) and the ECB's will be attached to the rain check! So, you can hold onto your raincheck until you get the coupons and then get the deal once the shelves are restocked!!

I would recommend you do some of the great CVS deals this week to get some ECB's to "roll" beginning 1/9!!
(thanks, Jamie)

Here is another deal beginning 1/9:
maalox CVS: $8 Maalox Money Maker!

11 Savvy Spending tips for 2011: Shop for Gifts All Year Long

Tip #5: Be Savvy with your Spending by Stocking up on Gifts all year long!

I love to shop, even if it is only window shopping, or "Internet Window" shopping online! ;) I love to buy things for others and stockpile for birthday and Christmas gifts all year long. Just like your grocery shopping stockpile= if you buy it when it's at a rock bottom price instead of when you need it, you'll save money!

I love to shop when stores have their clearance sales, use the amazing daily deal sites like Groupon and Eversave, and when companies are offering a "free money" coupon. I'm able to buy my friends and family nice gifts, things I know they'll like, for a fraction of the price!

Here are my tips for Stocking up on gifts for less:

1) Know for whom you'll be buying gifts for the entire next year and be on the lookout all year.
You probably know who you'll be buying gifts for this next year: Friends, Family, your children's friends birthdays, etc. If you see a good deal for someone on your list, buy it now and put it away!

2) Shop the sale or clearance racks!
When I go to any department store, I first make a beeline for the clearance area. Places like Kohls and Target often have great steals there! If you are buying for kids or babies, it's so easy to get these items for less because you can plan ahead for seasons and sizes of clothes! Buy summer clothes in the winter when they are deeply discounted!
I will let you in on a great secret- Target will be marking down TONS of toys to 75% off SOON. They do a big toy markdown twice a year- January and July (you can see what I got last July here)! I will stalk the aisles or call daily until the prices go to 75% off. Then I restock my "gift" cabinet with toys for the next year! I may spend $75 in one trip, but I will be pretty much set on gifts for kids for the whole next year! Plus, I like to have toys in this cupboard as surprises for my kids- for their half birthdays, when they've been extra good, potty training, etc.

3) Use "free money" to buy gifts.
If I get a "free money" coupon to JC Penney, I'll usually try to use it on a gift for someone. I can find a good deal, get $10-15 off with the coupon, and save on a nice gift. If you're worried about getting something for a friend or family member too early in advance, get something for your spouse that he/she needs. They'll be surprised and appreciative of the fact that you used your free money on them!

4) Shop the great deals online for gifts.
We saw a lot of Free Money deals online last year and I'm certain we'll see them again this year. If a website has a coupon code for $10 off $10 or you can stack a "dollar off" coupon with a free shipping coupon, you should be able to find a great gift at a great price.
Even if you aren't buying many gifts, you can shop for things you know your family needs- new shoes for the kids, new coats or sweater for you or your spouse- think ahead!

5) Use Swagbucks to get free money for Amazon.com!
This is probably the easiest way to save on gifts. I love Swagbucks because the points I get for just searching the web really add up! I try to save my swagbucks all year and cash in on Amazon gift cards before Christmas time. I love Amazon because they have great deals, free shipping, great customer service, and you can find just about anything there!

11 Savvy Spending Tips for 2011- Day 4: Don't pay for things you can get for free!

Tip #4: Be Savvy with your Spending by not paying for things you can get for FREE!

If you're looking to save some money this year, consider these ways to keep your money in your pocket:

1) Magazines-  stop paying for susbscriptions and sign up for all the free magazines that are offered. I get Woman's Day, Rachel Ray, Working Mother, Parents, Parenting, Better Homes & Gardens, Shape, Us Weekly, and my husband get Sports Illustrated-- all of them are free! Rewards Gold, Value Mags, FreeBiz etc. all offer free subscriptions very often.
If you don't want to wait, consider using your Pampers Points or RecycleBank points for a free subscription.

2) Movie Rentals- with the new $1 rentals at Redbox and Blockbuster Express, you don't have to spend a fortune to rent a movie! I used to hate to pay $4 for a rental at Blockbuster stores. Now we get movies for free when Redbox and Blockbuster have free codes.
You can also watch Amazon movies on demand with your TV and computer! They will often have great deals or free codes so you can see a movie for free!
Your library probably rents out DVD's for free as well!

3) Babysitters- want a date night but paying for a sitter makes it too expensive? Ask some friends if they'll watch your kids this weekend while you have a dinner date and then return the favor the next time! My sister and friend do this and it's great. The kids have fun playing together and the adults get to have a relaxing dinner together. If it goes well, you can agree to swap once a month!

4) Museum Admission- If you're a Bank of America cardholder, you can get in to most museums for free the first weekend of every month. Another idea- check with your local library. My library offers Museum Adventure Passes that you can check out for free. Each pass gives you admission for either 2 or 4 people. There are many great libraries featured and we've taken advantage of this great program!

5) Books-  Obviously, it's much cheaper to borrow a book rather than buy it. I'm not one to re-read a book anyway, so buying a book to read once isn't worth it to me. I love our local library and they make it really easy to check out great new titles. About once a month I'll search for a list of books I'd like to read- new releases, books I've heard about, classics I've never read- and I'll go to the library's website and "request" these titles. If they aren't in, I'm put on a waiting list and notified when it's on the hold shelf waiting for me to pick it up!
Another new way to read books is on your computer, Kindle, itouch, etc. You can get tons of free Kindle downloads that you can save to your laptop or other electronic device!
You can also check out www.paperbackswap.com to trade books with other readers.
And finally, Crown Publishing often gives away free books with their Read it Forward promo!

6) Cell Phones- You don't need to buy an expensive phone. Most companies will give you a free phone (even the fancy new ones) with a 2 year contract.
