SPRING into Couponing!

I was in my local Meijer the other day, and as often happens, I ran into a couple who had attended one of my coupon classes. I asked them how their couponing was going, and they replied that they hadn't really even started yet!
This got me thinking last night as I was preparing for my next class in one week. WHY would some people who learn how to coupon and see how beneficial it can be decide not to dive right in? I mean, Yes, I understand that couponing isn't for everyone, but this couple had asked lots of questions in my class and seemed genuinely interested in slashing their grocery bills in half with coupons!
So, I came up with a few pointers for people who want to get started couponing-- some tips for beginning this new style of shopping so that you don't give up before you really see the difference it can make!

I'm calling it "S.P.R.I.N.G. into Couponing!"
S- Start Small. Don't think that you have to completely, 180 degrees, change the way you shop on the first day! Try to clip a few coupons and use them when the item is at a rock bottom price. Or, just tackle one store at a time to learn the ropes. Maybe begin by couponing just at a drugstore, like CVS, or at your favorite grocery store. Remember, big changes- in anything- take gradual steps to reach completion!

P- Policy, Policy, Policy! I've talked to many newbies who have gotten frustrated because they didn't know the "tricks" of a certain store. Whichever store you choose to begin with, read and understand their coupon policy! You can find these on AFullCup.com as well as on my right sidebar. Some stores will double coupons; many will not. Some stores are funny about Internet coupons; some stores want them to be printed in color. Some stores will ask that you use a loyalty card to get the best price. Whatever "it" is- each store is different. Once you practice and get a few shopping trips under your belt, I promise it will all become easy to you!

R-Read all about it! There are so many great resources on the Internet to help you along the way. There are hundreds of blogs (like mine! wink!) that offer tips, coupon/store matchups, free samples, ways to make money, and helpful advice. There are coupon forums, like AFullCup and WeUseCoupons where friendly couponers will ask and answer questions. You can literally find every store in the US listed on these sites! Find a few sites and/or blogs that you like and check them once in a while. For example, here at Savvy Spending, I will list every Sunday what you can for free/cheap at Meijer, CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid. Blogs in other parts of the country cover stores local to them. Most bloggers are loyal couponers who really desire to share the best deals with their readers! So take advantage of what they are offering!

I-Invest in a stockpile! Stockpiling will save you a TON of money in your grocery bills. The reason I say "invest" is that some couponers feel that they are actually spending more when they start stockpiling, and this may be true.... but it is totally worth it! About 2 years ago, I spent about $10-15 on Garnier shampoo, conditioner, and styling products. Now, this $10-15 may not have been in my budget for the month, but I haven't paid for shampoo, conditioner, or styling products since then-- not once in 2 years! Just think if you apply that to all your grocery needs! I may not need 5 boxes of pancake mix right now, but if it is only $0.50 as opposed to $3 and it won't go bad in the next 6-12 months, than it makes sense to buy a lot when it is at rock bottom prices. If I can get it from my stockpile when I need it and avoid paying $3 at the store on the day I run out of it, I've saved money!

N- Never give up! Couponing is what you make of it. If you have the time, energy, and desire to spend hours each week scouring the sales ads, clipping coupons, reading the blogs, and going to different stores- than that's great! If you don't (and you really don't need to spend hours), than do what you can! But, don't give up before you've really tried! Like any new skill, couponing is something that you'll get better at as you practice. Each and every coupon you use equals money kept in your pocket, so stick with it!

G- Give yourself a pat on the back! Look back at your grocery budget and see what you've saved once you began couponing! Look at your pantry and cupboards- do you have more food than you had before but have spent less money on it? Give yourself credit for making a choice to stretch your money by using coupons and changing the way you shop!

If you are new to couponing, I hope these tips will encourage you stick with it and keep practicing!
If you are new and need help understanding some of the "couponing lingo", see my post here.

How to get coupons without buying a paper!

I've been couponing for years now, but only started having the paper delivered about 5 months ago (with a Groupon deal!). You actually don't have to pay for a paper in order to get coupons! Here are the ways that I got coupons, without buying a newpaper!

1) Internet: I have gone on countless shopping trips where ALL of the coupons I've redeemed have been printed off the Internet! There are so many websites that offer free coupons these days! If you have a computer, printer, some paper and ink, you can coupon really well with just the Internet Printables!

2) Family: My dear Mom and Mom-in-Law both give me their coupons every weekend. They may clip a few, but they come to me almost completely intact! In turn, I hook them up with freebies now and again. Ask your family members who live close by to save their coupons for you!

3) Collection Box: My friend Kate started a coupon box at our church- but you can do this anywhere! So many people don't use their coupons and they go into the garbage! Ask your neighbors, coworkers, church friends, MOPS group, gym buddies-- anyone-- if they wouldn't mind bringing their coupons in and sharing them! Create a drop off spot with a box for people to leave their coupons. Anyone is free to take what they need and leave what they don't! The coupon box at my church is often FULL of multiple week's inserts- so my couponing friends and I can take what we will use- for free!

4) Trade: When I first started couponing, I found this great site called AFullCup. You can trade coupons in this online, forum-based website. Just look for ones you need or leave a post detailing what you have. Then work out the trade with the people who email you. It may take a few days for your coupons to arrive, but it's a great way to find a lot of certain coupon. If you know of a hot deal coming up, you can easily get 15-20 of a single coupon with a quick and easy trade.

5) Dumpster Dive: No, I'm not kidding! I have never done this before, but I do know that many people become friends with their neighborhood recycling centers and will ask to go through the recycleable paper to find the inserts!

6) Work out a trade with a coffee shop, fast food place, restaurant, etc: You know how lots of neighborhood coffee shops get papers to offer their patrons while they sip their lattes? You could work out a deal with them- you get to take the inserts from the Sunday paper if you will come by every Monday morning and take their old papers to the recycling bin for them.

7) Join a coupon train: I participated in a coupon train last year and I receive some great coupons. AFullCup offers lots of train you can "jump" on. You just set up your "wishlist" and each week you are assigned someone to send coupons to and someone is assigned to you. Check their wishlist (and they'll check yours) and send them some coupons. A few days later, you get the fun of opening an envelope full of coupons you can probably use!

8) Write to manufacturers: This is a great way to get high value and RARE coupons. I will be starting a series soon where I'll provide the list of a few manufacturers and their email addresses. You can choose to write to them and hopefully receive some great coupons (possibly freebies) back! Stay tuned for this new series!!

9) Keep your Eyes Peeled: When you're shopping, start looking for blinkies and tearpads with coupons in the grocery aisles! These are often great coupons and are sometimes coupons you won't find in the paper. I ALWAYS grab tearpad coupons because they are often rare and have a long expiration date!

10) Look on Craigslist or Freecycle: You can often find people in your area who would gladly give you their coupons. If you don't see a post advertising this, start a thread requesting unused coupon inserts! You'll probably get lots of responses!

Do you have any other suggestions for getting coupons for free? Please share in the comment section!

Guest Post: Gardening 101- Picking a spot for your garden!

I hope you enjoy this Guest Post from my friend Marissa. Gardening is NOT my forte, so I'll be learning along with you in this post!

I’ve been asked many many times to start a Gardening for beginners series as we approach the gardening season. This series of posts will go from basic ideas and tips on getting ready to garden, to optional things like growing herbs, and we will go more into depth as the series goes on.

Before you order the seeds and before you start dreaming about fresh squash and zucchini, you need to find a spot to put that garden. The first year we moved into our house I selected a spot for the garden. This was before we had any extra buildings on the property like the chicken coop and the garage. The ground tilled up easily and I would have had a great garden except for the fact that they day after we planted we had a really bad rain storm and it washed away alot of my plants. I had selected a good spot as far as the ground went but I failed to look at where the water would flow in the event of a rainstorm. I still ended up having an ok garden because of the starter plants but all the seeds I had planted washed away.

The next year, last year, we decided to make the garden bigger so it had to be moved. We had put up our chicken shed and moved one of our small sheds and there just wouldn’t be enough room. I knew better than to move it to a spot where the water would flow since we’ve had issues every year out here, and so I picked a new spot where I could have lots of room. We went and borrowed a tiller for the hubby’s father and started tilling up the garden. The ground didn’t budge. The hubby ran the tiller over it once and after he was done it looked like he didn’t even do anything. So my dad brought over his tractor and we tried again. It was still very difficult but we made a little progress. After he finished with the tractor we took manure and spread it all over the garden and tried to till it up again with the hand tiller. The sod was still hard and difficult so in the end we ended up using a hoe and a hand rake to at least get the soil ok to plant my starters. My garden did ok but still wasn’t the best. After we finished last year dad brought the tractor again and the big plow and ran it through the garden. Hopefully this year with a little extra work it will be ready to go.

The moral of the story is… pick your spot for a garden wisely. Here are some basic tips:
  1. Pick a spot with the best soil. It doesn’t have to be perfectly black beautiful dirt, it just should be workable. You cal always add in minerals and such later. For example our soil is ok, but we will be adding more manure this year and we will be adding sand to make it porous. Obviously try to avoid an area with alot of rocks.
  2. Pick a spot in the sun or in partial sun/shade. Not a shady spot.
  3. Think about your water source. You need to be able to haul water easily to the garden or at least be in hose distance to your hydrant.
  4. What about wind? Out here on the prairie it’s difficult to avoid the wind so I do other things to prevent my plants from dying from wind exposure. However if you have a natural windbreak in your land or if you are planning on building a solid fence those would be ideal.
  5. Pick a spot away from the natural disaster elements. In my example above we moved our garden to avoid flooding last year. There is an old creek bed that runs through our land that I didn’t see until we looked at Google maps. It was something that needed to be avoided.
