On My Bookshelf: State of Wonder by Ann Patchett
The story is amazing. State of Wonder
is about a pharmaceutical researched, Marina, who goes into the Brazilian jungle to find her friend and coworker, Anders. She doesn't want to go, but believes that she must. While there, she meets Dr. Anneck Swenson, formerly her professor in medical school, who is conducting life-changing research while living with the Lakashi tribe. I won't spoil your reading with any more details than that. But I will tell you that the the last chapter will change everything and, like me, you will read this one sentence towards the end that will blow your mind. You'll sit up straighter in the chair in which you're reading, suddenly excited to see where the story will lead you. When you finish the last chapter, you'll finally let out the breath you've been holding, drop the book down, and say to yourself or anyone who is in the room, "Wow!"
.......... Just trust me.
I liked Ann Patchett's style of writing so much, that I picked up a few of her other novels from the library last week. State of Wonder was the first book by Patchett that I had read, but I had heard of Bel Canto and The Magician's Assistant before. Patchett's writing is so fluid and beautiful, it's like poetry. She pieces words together in a sentence in such a way that you think it will never work-- like a puzzle made up of pieces from many different boxes-- but you're surprised at the end of each sentence that it made more sense the way she said it than it could ever have otherwise.
