How I save time and money buying ground beef in bulk
The price of hamburger meat is going up, up, up. So lately what I've been doing to save some money is to purchase the 3 pound rolls they sell at Meijer and Kroger. There are usually priced about $10.99, so just $3.66 per pound.
Then when I go to make dinner using 1 pound of beef, I'll prep two more dinners using the other 2 pounds.
For example, I may make tacos with 1 pound of meat, prepare freezer meatballs with another pound, and prep chili or spaghetti with the last pound.
Or I'll make BBQ Meatloaf with 1 pound to have that night, make Taco Soup with another, and brown the last 1 pound to save for Sloppy Joes or Tacos for later in the week.
If you need more than 1 pound of meat for dinner (sometimes I make bigger portions so we can have leftovers), you could use 1.5 pounds and get two meals from one roll.
Here are some recipe ideas that you could make with 1 pound of ground beef:
- BBQ Meatloaf
- Spaghetti (add the cooked beef to the sauce and store in the fridge for a few days-- the sauce always tastes better after the flavors have combined for a few days!)
- Chili (same as spaghetti-- always tastes better the next day)
- BBQ Meatballs
- Taco Soup
- Sloppy Joe's
- Cheeseburger Casserole
- Hamburger Patties
- Cowboy Casserole
- Baked Ziti or Mostaccioli
- Enchilada Casserole
